What is a Coppernose Bluegill?
![]()
Coppernose is not a Hybrid
Coppernose bluegill have been around for a long time. They are only one of three recognized subspecies of bluegill (lepomis macrochirus). Coppernose (lepomis macrochirus purpurescens) is native to Peninsular of Florida. Coppernose bluegill have 12 soft rays on their anal fin as opposed to 11 soft rays found on the regular bluegill. Coppernose have fewer but wider vertical bars on their sides than do regular (common or native ) bluegill. Coppernose also have orange margins to their fins. Male coppernose has a broad copper band above the eye or forehead and are prominent during spawning season. Reproduction of the Coppernose is about the same as with most all bluegill. They are not a Hybrid
Fish farms and live haulers in Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and Arkansas have sold the Coppernose fingerlings to almost every state in the United States. Fish Farms in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin have raised the Coppernose Bluegill well over one pound. The cold temperature of the Northern United States have had some slowing down effect on the growth rate of the Coppernose as compared to the Southern United States. This should be expected because of the shorter growing season. Studies on the Coppernose in the northern United States states show that it is even more important for pond owners to use proper pond management (fertilizing program) because of the shorter growing season.
The truth is Coppernose bluegill will do good, if you provide the right food in your pond for your fish during the growing season, by proper management of your pond or by feeding artificial pellet feed. I have not seen any common or native bluegill in the two pound range. I have raised and seen the Coppernose over two and a half pound size with the help of artificial feed. The Coppernose will grow larger and faster than native or common bluegill without artificial feed. This has been proven to be a fact on studies on the Coppernose. Artificial feed has been use to excelerate the growth rate of most all fish. Most all bluegill will readily take to artificial feed. But the Coppernose Bluegill are getting in the two pound range and more of them are getting the two pound range than the common or native bluegill with the use of artificial feed.Coppernose Prices
