FATHEAD MINNOWS FOR FORAGE FISH
Suttle Fish Farm sells these minnows
for pond stocking with Bass & Catfish. These are an ideal fish to
stock along with your Bass & Catfish. A lot of catfish farmers
stock these fish in catfish ponds to help offset the feed bill on
raising catfish. The main importance of the fathead minnow is to
provide forage for your bass and catfish. The fathead minnow is a fresh
water fish, native to most states. They generally reach 2 to 3 inches
in length and have a life span of two to three years. Fathead minnows
are sometimes called "tuffy" , "ruby red", or "blackhead". They come in
two different colors, black and rosey red (orange) as shown above.
Stocking fatheads with game fish will greatly increase the growth of
the game fish. The Fathead Minnow is very prolific. Spawning begins
when the water temperature reaches 50 to 55 degress fahrenheitand
repeats monthly until water cools down in the fall. They lay between 2
to 500 eggs per spawn. The female deposits eggs into the nest or
nesting spots and after fertilization the male takes over
and guards it. The fathead minnow eggs hatch in five days. These
minnows get to a length of two to three inches. Suttle Fish Farm
recommends a stocking rate of 1000 per surface acre for
forage. They are also an excellent fish bait for white perch. The
Fathead minnows are an excellent investment when stocking a new pond.
The can be added to existing ponds but you would stock them in April
before spawning season. Our clients have really seen the benefits of
these fish.
Note: If you are ordering Fathead Minnows to stock in a pond with existing White Perch & Bass, you will need to get on our list so that we can save you some adult fatheads ready for spawning. The Fathead minnows should be stocked in March or April for immediate reproduction of the fatheads. Price Call
